Large scale algae production kicked off with inoculation of Nannochloropsis.

Proviron has entered the next phase in the development of its ProviAPT system for microalgae cultivation. The new version of its reactor unit rolling off the fully automated production line now boasts a capacity almost quadrupling that of its predecessor.

The pilot algae production facility at Hooge Maey (Antwerp) already houses five of these units corresponding to a total of 175 individual flat panel reactors. A string of rigorous functionality tests have proven the robustness of the system. The increase in capacity is an important step in the evolution to a 500 m2 algae farm this year.

At the same time, the fruitful collaboration with our research partners in the Alchemis project has seen all equipment in place for harvesting and processing of the produced biomass.

This means ‘all systems go’ for the large scale production of microalgae. The reactors have been inoculated with Nannochloropsis and cultures are picking up quick. Proviron is aiming at several hundreds of kilograms of Nannochloropsis and Isochrysis in its first year of actual algae production. The algae, intended for use in feed and food applications, are produced under closely monitored conditions at all time.
